Athlete of the Year

Air Force Announces Its Athletes of the Year for 2008

The Male Athlete of the Year was awarded to Technical Sergeant Michael Bergquist.  His performance at the 2008 Armed Forces Triathlon Championship directly resulted in the teams silver medal, he went on to place sixth out of 90 elite athletes over all.  He competed in an Olympic distance of a 1500 meter swim, 24.8 mile bike ride, and 6.2 mile run finishing with a time of 1:57:11.  Sergeant Bergquist was also the third and final scoring elite US male at the International Military Triathlon in Otepaa, Estonia with a time of 2:07:50.  He successfully won over 18 events, capably representing the Air Force at some of the nation’s most prominent events.  TSgt Bergquist is a Satellite Communication specialist with the 92nd Security Forces Squadron assigned to Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington.

The Female Athlete of the Year was awarded to First Lieutenant Dana Pounds.  She is USA Track & Field’s second ranked javelin thrower in the United States and the International Amateur Athletic Federation’s thirty-forth ranked javelin thrower in the World.  Lieutenant Pounds placed second at the US Olympic Track & Field Trials, qualifying for the 2008 US Olympic Team, but was just twenty-four inches shy of the International Qualifying mark for the 2008 Olympic Games.  She is the current American record holder at the prestigious Oregon Twilight Meet and at the Drake Relays in Iowa.  She has only been defeated three times in the United States over the past two years.  First Lieutenant Pounds is an Acquisitions Officer with the 504th Aircraft Sustainment Squadron assigned to Hill Air Force Base, Utah.
