AIR FORCE LIBRARY INFORMATION PROGRAM

The Air Force Library Information Program provides access to information essential to the Air Force mission, supports professional military and voluntary education programs, and offers library facilities, resources, and services to enhance the quality of life for authorized customers.  The central library office provides technical guidance, staff assistance, training, corporate oversight, and central procurement services for all Air Force libraries, information centers, field operating agencies, direct reporting units, contingencies, and remote sites worldwide.

The Air Force currently has over 100 libraries which consist of general, academic, technical and/or research libraries.  These libraries support over 12 million customers annually with a circulation of over 15 million.  Holdings include 9.2 million print, non-print (audiovisual), and electronic resources.  All Air Force libraries provide free Internet for customers, and over 50 per cent have wireless access.

Additionally, one library service center at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, provides support to over 150 contingencies, remote sites, and foreign missions as well as to nine branch libraries in various European countries.  Eight Learning Resource Centers are in Southwest Asia to support continuing education, professional needs, and quality of life for personnel supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom.  Over 250 remote sites and contingency operations are supported worldwide.
Many Air Force libraries provide extensive resources for military requirements, professional military education, voluntary education degrees, and leisure needs of Air Force personnel and their families.  Special initiatives include the Air Force Chief of Staff Professional Reading List, LEAN, foreign language and cultural support as well as programs for teens and children.
